Sergio was born in 1961 in Cartago, Costa Rica a small town in the central valley surrounded by mountains and full of natural contrasts where his passion for art began.

He studied in “La Escuela de Bellas Artes” in the Universidad Autónoma de Centroamérica; as well as continuing the development of this painting and drawing skills, he also studied illustration, graphic design, marketing and art history.

He has worked as a designer for various agencies and as a freelance designer, also he has designed and mounted two of the rooms in the Children’s Museum in San José, Costa Rica.

Turning now to his paintings, Sergio first exhibition was a collective one in 1982 in Cartago. Since then he has had many exhibitions both individual and collective in Costa Rica, Mexico, Ecuador and England. His paintings can be found in many different countries around the world.

In 1997, he moved to England were he continued painting and exhibiting his work, opening himself up to new cultural influences.

After returning to live in Costa Rica for four years, promoting his work and expanding his techniques in colour and other themes, he has come back to England to continue promoting his work in Europe. However he never loses sight of his most important artistic contact: to continue exhibiting in Costa Rica and Latin America.

In his painting Sergio’s Latin American roots are apparent, reflecting the life, the pain, nostalgia and passion of the people. In many of his paintings you can find a central female figure, which for Sergio is a symbol of life. Through her face and her surroundings, Sergio expresses his observation of the world. The backgrounds in many of his paintings are magical landscapes and parts of houses, a world of lines and forms full of colors and contrasts, which he uses like language in his work.
